The Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology offers a graduate research program leading to the Ph.D. degree awarded by the Indiana University Graduate School. The program provides rigorous theoretical and experimental preparation for a career in modern biochemistry and molecular biology. The research of the faculty includes signal transduction mechanisms, molecular biology, enzyme catalysis, post-translational modification, cell cycle and DNA repair, post-transcriptional controls, regulation of metabolic processes, macromolecular structure and function, bioinformatics and computational biology, proteomics and genomics, gene regulation, chemical biology and structural biology. Extensive research interactions occur with other academic and clinical departments on the Indianapolis campus. Much of the research is of fundamental importance to cancer, diabetes, alcoholism and other diseases. Most of the faculty are associated with one or more of the following major research centers: Indiana Alcohol Research Center, Center for Diabetes Research, Indiana University Cancer Center, Center for Medical Genomics and Center for Structural Biology.
Biochemistry and Molecular Biology students will participate in the Indiana University School of Medicine BioMedical Gateway (IBMG) Program providing a common first year curriculum. Students normally choose a mentor at the end of the first year and begin to select elective courses in the Spring of the first year. Academic requirements are normally completed within two years, at which point the student devotes full-time to an original investigation culminating in the Ph.D. Thesis.
